Can we make much of fertility (measured as birthrate) by hair color given the obvious confound of social attitudes? Factors such as rarity, distinctiveness, desirability etc? Endocrinological analysis is probably the only way to look for meaningful connections

IMO, ideally you’d measure proxies of fertility and compare to natural hair color. Birthrate could be a poor measure of fertility.

According to some archaeogeneticists, blond and red hair weren't particularly common in prehistoric Europe. The Yamnaya, for example, mostly had dark hair. The increase in certain hair colors over historical time isn't surprising if you have listened to mid century pop music...
