When you take into account that open borders allow them to keep more money by paying less the immigrant workers. It's short sighted but it's not incoherent.

I’d say incoherence is in the environment more so than in the opinions. People carry interdependencies in their hypothetical preferred positions.

Not necessarily incoherent. Eliminating the welfare programmes would discourage a great number of welfare-sucking immigrants not to come, and instead encourage skilled, intelligent immigrants to come. I don't know how much do the skilled immigrants vote for higher taxes, though.

The romans did something like this too. Come to think of it, it goes back to ancient Summer.

Mass low-skill immigration and no immigration at all is a false dichotomy. Mass high-skill immigration is an arbitrage opportunity for Western countries. Easy to test for cognitive ability and almost unlimited pool to draw from (third world).
