Thread. Even if you're already convinced that University of Pennsylvania's Amy Wax is a racist, @IChotiner's interview with her is well worth reading.

Who said I do? In this case I had a special interest: Wax sometimes writes in my area, & had a working relationship with WB Wilcox, my longtime collaborator. I also despite the influence of the Wax-ites on our polity.

But as Wax’s fellow racist, I’m sure you’re invested in defending her. Indeed, I can’t think of a white nationalist as highly placed in academe as Wax is.

I think it would be better, usually, to address the arguments and likely consequences of policies. Is X racist is no longer edifying because, as Wax noted, the word has lost almost all meaning. But, Saint Augustine really was saintly. End of debate.

I disagree about racism. Just because the Woke have abused it doesn’t mean they get to control the lexicon. /1

My disagreement with Wax speaks to a set of principles that supersedes policy: America’s ideal as a liberal democratic melting pot, not an ethnostate. /2

I can’t speak to Nick’s motivations, but I suspect that many academics feel envy and resentment towards Amy. Harvard MD, Columbia JD, Yale BS, Oxford postgrad, neurologist turned Supreme Court litigator. And academics all know that she’s judging them for their cowardice.
