I remember how he described that time in military history as being weird for being as modern as it was but still having horses. Then I learned that even during WWII horses were doing most of the logistics. Even some mounted calvary. Feel a bit misled. Or Im misremembering
In early stages, yes. Lot of the German initial forces were horse powered.

I can make sense of horses being used for transport. Horses in battle is much harder to understand!

Poking around wikipedia.. - Soviets threw some calvary into combat in desperation, but they were completely ineffective - Germans had some calvary units, but they were either policing captured territory, or merely infantry who traveled on horseback, but didnt fight on horse back
