We don't know what it would do to our ecosystem. Maybe it's safe, but we don't know. Check out the four pests campaign by Mao ze Tung. He tried to exterminate sparrows but it had unintended consequences. ( He also tried to exterminate mosquitoes)

I think we can be as confident as we are of anything in the biological sphere that exterminating a small number of species of mosquitoes wouldn't do anything as bad as malaria. Mao's stupid attack on the four pests would have been justified if it eliminated malaria.
