Why do so few professors take advantage of tenure to pursue controversial research? W/ a few big exceptions most scholars come up with their major ideas—and are most radical—in their 20s-30s. Tenure happens ~40 if you're lucky. Not many ppl going to start something from scratch.

Nobody in their 20s has the money to run innovative experiments anyway. Takes you years to get the clout to be entrusted to do anything independent in general, let some something bold.

In social science, sure they do. Online surveys are cheap, many datasets public.
