I think @nathancofnas is wrong about this.
A lot of people are criticizing the Left's current tactics on the grounds that they won't work. But they are manifestly working! Academics that they don't like are getting fired, views they don't like are marginalized etc.

As I argue, it depends on what you mean by "won't work." Academics who engage in wrongthink get fired, marginalized, etc. But controversial ideas aren't going away--they're just taken up by people outside the mainstream. There will be negative consequences do this.
-
Of course if punishing wrongthinkers is an end in itself then deplatforming usually works. But one hopes (perhaps naively) that deplatformers have more noble goals than that.
-
Sounds like you too should have a YouTube debate?
I think we can probably arrange something? -
I dunno, I'm worried I might get deplatformed

-
Not even joking, I wouldn't want to draw a lot of attention to myself in relation to controversial topics as doing so is dangerous. Which in itself supports my claim tha deplatforming is effective as a deterrent to people even thinking about certain things.
-
perhaps it doesn't deter people from thinking about certain things, but it deters people from thinking clearly about them (and perhaps even encourages "worst case" thinking, which is a valid point from
@nathancofnas )

I think he is wrong. It will fail to suppress extremism but will succeed in supressing mainstream opposition. In fact actual act of extremism helps with the later.
