I don't know whether this hypothesis is right, but it's an alternative to the environmentalist one of greater opportunities. I note that sex differences in intelligence are larger in north Euros too (and Ashkenazim!) in line with personality differences.
@DavidePiffer wrote a paper on this back in 2014. Back when I reviewed it and thought it implausible, but now I'm having second thoughts.
