This is a less pronounced trend by comparison, though still some growth over the past few yearspic.twitter.com/m2t8mGcGOa

First NYT mention of LGBT (N=1,871) was in 2001pic.twitter.com/9XN1yNPKTf

In response to @KatyaSedgwick's suggestion, I ran a combined LGBT + LGBTQ search. Such actually moves the first NYT appearance back to 1995 (though they didn't use the acronym. Impressed that Lexisnexis nonetheless caught it)pic.twitter.com/pnQIFaqwQw

Someone requested a 'transgender' search. Here you go. First (and isolated) mention, believe it or not, was in 1986.pic.twitter.com/t5M9mDDRap

Also saw a request for 'safe space'. First (of 1,036) appearance of these words in the NYT was in a 1983 article on a school ('Safe Space') for the deaf. Something tells me the context of its usage has changed overtime. Anyways, here you have it.pic.twitter.com/gIEMrZQFeE

Do some neutral/random words for control. Like "ship", "monk", "red", "frog".

Exactly, get some indication of the general growth of LexisNexis over the same time to the true extend of these trends. If its not an integrated function go for some general words like "are" or "is".

Another control term. I don't blame some for alleging it (it is pretty remarkable), but the trends above aren't simply function of ALL mention frequencies shooting up between 2012-2018.pic.twitter.com/ddjt1dP9JS

This sort of thing can’t be happening by accident. There’s no organically occurring change in metrics (record low black unemployment!) that correlates. The same tell-graphs would appear nigh identical at every 🇺🇸’n MSM Media outlet. This is about as spontaneous as a 🚀 launch.
