Indeed. In this case, there isn't even any nice heuristic one could point to and say, "would have caught this". Psychiatry isn't that left-tilted, most of these researchers were not motivated by money directly, it wasn't aligned with a particular zeitgeist.
The requirement that new findings be _directly_ replicated in independent samples before we accept them would certainly have stemmed the tide.
