Funny and true review in Slatestarcodex on the history of 5-HTTLPR research. TL;DR for decades, there were 1000s of papers and millions of $ spent on researching this loci and its relations to psychiatric issues. Indeed. In this case, there isn't even any nice heuristic one could point to and say, "would have caught this". Psychiatry isn't that left-tilted, most of these researchers were not motivated by money directly, it wasn't aligned with a particular zeitgeist.

The requirement that new findings be _directly_ replicated in independent samples before we accept them would certainly have stemmed the tide.
