Not neccearily. Keeping open gulf oil supplies was often a geo strategic goal, ie it wasnt directly in US interests but was done for allies and the global economy in general.
I’m not sure invading Iraq improved our position there though. Possibly made it worse by emboldening Iran.

Right, but it was only depressed bc of US sanctions. Saddam was willing to play ball with as as well.
Ideal alternative is some sort of deal with Saddam in 2003 under the threat of war. Opening up Iraq but with numerous concessions on security. I do think that's possible from Saddam's end, if the US wasnt so commited to war.
From everything I’ve read he was open to that sort of thing. I’m still not sure why we were so quick to invade.
