Evidence that uni education is mostly signalling? Economists differ markedly. Shakespeare and Vygotsky are worth reading regardless of whether they increase graduates' earnings. Bills (2003) Credentials, signals, and screens. Review of Educational Research, 73(4), 441-469.

Evidence is summarized in https://quillette.com/2018/06/03/bryan-caplans-case-education-review/ … Good for people who want to read that stuff. Most people don't want to, and there's no serious evidence forcing them to read it has any benefits, so why the slavery (homework in school = forced unpaid labor).

Caplan is tendentious (Usher, 2018). People should read Shakespeare + if they want a uni education, which increases graduates' understanding & appreciation of the world. No one is forced to study at uni. Usher, A (2018) The case against education, Feb 1,http://higheredstrategy.com/the-case-against-education/ …

Passing the exams without having read at all is a bit difficult.

Hey, that's not quite fair. Slaves didn't pay for the pleasure of working. That said, I rarely did the reading in college, since it simply wasn't necessary to achieve my goal (to wit: getting an A). I read iff the material was interesting.
