I think a potential mistake here is in assuming everyone who votes for a party gets a say in where it goes. Some people are just along for the ride. A powerful, active core is more important is determining direction than the passive, disengaged mass

The same is true for the electorate as a whole. Most people have preferences but are politically inert until pushed in one direction or another. Just my 2 cents anyway
