Common sense: Many of greatest scientific discoveries/engineering innovations occurred w/o modern gatekeeping peer review (heliocentric solar system; laws of motion; evolution; quantam mechanics; relativity; computers; cell phones). Generally, this post-publication review approach has been a failure so far, with a number of significant attempts. The method is not aligned with the needs of the academy, which wants something simple to base hiring and promotion decisions on. Preprints do this function now tho
