White people evolved to live in higher latitudes where seeing better in the dark is a distinct survival advantage (would be my guess). The same is said for blue eyes.

So did East Asians, and yet they have smaller pupils. Maybe that's a body size confound. I don't think this dataset has height, for some odd reason, so I can't adjust.

Northern Europe is higher latitude than East Asia, the mutation could have happened there, especially in places that have very dark winters?

Yes East Asia is colder than Europe at the same latitudes. Larger pupil size an advantage at higher latitudes

I always assume anything to do with whites is vitamin D related (also circadian maintenance in cloudy environments):https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3572765/ …
