That's an association, but which way does causality go? This one would require a longitudinal follow-up study where one followed people thru before and after breakups with multiple after surveys, with perhaps 1 month intervals. Might be hard to find.

Later studies of this data (some of same authors) added fascinating insights. Selection (much of happiness / marriage effect) habituation (slow). Etc
