This is why I think animal comparisons are unhelpful or even dishonest when discussing race. Subspecies are often designated mostly for conservation purposes, and taxonomy is constantly up for debate and in flux.
So you think human genetics is fraught with politics? Check out #wolf genetics. It's got everything: species vs. subspecies/race question, #admixture analysis, lots of genomics, political implications because govt bodies regulate based on findings.

Right, the ambiguities about what counts as a species under the Endangered Species Act are multi-billion dollar questions annually for real estate developers. E.g., is the rare California gnatcatcher a different species or just a different race than the common Baja gnatcatcher?
