Motivation: this geneticist says it wouldn't work, and it's a bizarrely common claim by academics who should know better.https://twitter.com/drderringer/status/1099321810468986883 …

With current in vitro fertilization techniques it is hard to generate large numbers of embryos. If that barrier can be crossed the embryo selection part would be feasible.

Not even true. There are multiple teams who have solved that problem already. One obvious route is somatic cell -> pluripotent stem cell -> egg cell. Could definitely be done in humans too, probably now if someone dared to try.http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2016/10/mouse-egg-cells-made-entirely-lab-give-rise-healthy-offspring …

Im aware of that work. If making gametes from somatic cells can work in humans that would solve the problem. I’d be surprised if people aren’t trying to make it work in humans, as there are lots of couples would can’t conceive by ivf, even without the embryo selection.

You can push the LGBT lobby for this because this method allows homosexuals to have real kids together. Male pairs can have boys and girls, but female pairs can only get more females, so they could start a sort of lesbian only subspecies. :p

But these two things are very different: ES - yes, even with todays tech (although models are not very good) GE - not in foreseeable future P.S. I work in genome research

If you think one is possible and the other not, then that means one of them is possible and the disjunctive is true, hence vote yes. GE, I see it easily doable soon (<5 years). How many edits do you really need to get some noticeable effect? Like pick the top 10 snps by beta.

I really hope the next large-scale survey of psychometrists by Rindermann et al. asks that question (with timelines!).

it will! ;)

Where's the "I'm not a geneticist and I don't know enough to say either way" option? Allow me to admit my ignorance dammit!
