You know that blind audition orchestra story you keep hearing about as evidence of obvious anti-female discrimination. Sounded too good to be true, and it was. Fake science news strikes again. Oh and btw, ~1400 citations and counting. https://medium.com/@jsmp/orchestrating-false-beliefs-about-gender-discrimination-a25a48e1d02 …pic.twitter.com/Vh6LsGZlXf

This blog selectively picks only the first half of the analyses the authors performed, then acts as if this is the totality of the paper's original evidence and that the authors were not aware of these preliminary issues. This is not how sincere scientific critique is conducted.

What do you think is good evidence in the paper that I don't address? There are some more tables in the rest of the paper, but I see p-values like 0.106 and 0.756.

I do not think the paper has strong evidence. But the authors do not claim to have strong evidence. They openly acknowledge their empirical shortcomings, the complexities of the analyses, and narrowness of the results. The blog, conversely, paints a crude and simple picture.

It begins with an utterly irrelevant example, quickly shifts to cherry picked statistics, selectively critiques those cherry picked stats, then concludes with an absolute condemnation. It could not have more completely ignored the substance of the original article...

I did not "cherry pick" anything. I went through all the major reported results in the paper. None of them give good evidence for the claim about gender discrimination that the study has been claimed to support. Thus, I write this in the conclusion.

How about the other famous study about African names on resumes? (Claiming African names hurt job seekers)

Same study showed no discrimination against women in callbacks. Other studies show statistical discrimination even by black employers against young inner city men, but not against black women or older age black men

Wow! I've repeated this story a dozen times, never once imagining that it was as fake as all the other grievance hoaxes.
