In other words, people change beliefs when one's stance on some issue becomes a probable signal of membership of the opposite tribe. "Beliefs" are cheap.

Definitely. This is also why intelligence is such a poor predictor of reasonable beliefs about these politicized issues, which is odd because normally it is a decent predictor of correct beliefs. See e.g. work by
@LJZigerell of scientific knowledge and creationism. -
