New paper out: Polygenic Scores Mediate the Jewish Phenotypic Advantage in Educational Attainment and Cognitive Ability Compared With Catholics and Lutherans Or, polygenic scores for IQ/edu seem to mediate ~50% of the Jewish advantage in IQ (~10 IQ) https://www.researchgate.net/publication/330601752_Polygenic_Scores_Mediate_the_Jewish_Phenotypic_Advantage_in_Educational_Attainment_and_Cognitive_Ability_Compared_With_Catholics_and_Lutherans …pic.twitter.com/BjbduudgUM

I wish someone would translate this for someone like me - the scientifically illiterate.

Jews have a higher average IQ than gentiles because of genes, not because Jewish mothers train their children to be good at taking IQ tests.

Thanks, Nathan. If you don’t mind, could you explain, in layman’s terms, how the study arrived at this conclusion.

Recent studies examined the DNA of many thousands of people looking for specific genetic variants associated with IQ. Having determined which variants increase IQ, you can predict people's IQ based on which ones they have. On average Jews have more IQ-increasing genetic variants.

How did the study avoid a circular conclusion? (Presumably, the genes involved in calculating the polygenic scores were identified based on naturally occurring variance in the population, which presumably included Jewish people.)

That contention is possible but not likely because Jews were a very small proportion of the training samples in the meta-analysis GWASs for IQ/edu.

Probably a very educated portion though -- in your own table, the F statistic for educational differences is >50 (!!!!).

This sample is not used in Lee I think or tiny proportion.
