I once looked at some sample questions on a exam for promotion to Captain in the NYPD. I go most of them right, enough to pass - invoking principles like " don't play practical jokes with a corpse, no matter how tempting".

But many cops just can't pass it, even after several tries. Same for the Sergeants' exam.

And, are you a good cop Mr Cochran? Point is is doing well in these tests in any way important for being a good Sergeant or Captain?

Cops have close-to-average IQs, but usually above 90. Would a cop with a higher IQ do better, on average? Probably: it's true for almost every job.

One year, in the Depression, New York City hired some cops, purely on their test results. They hired the top 300 out of 33,000 applicants. Average IQ was around 130. Over the years, that class did much better than average.
