Say it with me: diversity is our strength, correlation (r=0.66) ≠ causation !!pic.twitter.com/1VwelEg4Oo

the “x” in “Social Trust x Demographic Diversity Overtime” means “and” right? Can you “correlation (r=0.66) ≠ causation” and this is 0.66 out of 1.00 right?

Thanks, but I made a typo. I meant to type “Can you EXPLAIN “correlation (r=0.66) ≠ causation””. Like what does that mean? Sorry, I’m for not a math wiz.

r is the correlation coefficient (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearson_correlation_coefficient …), essentially a measure of how (linearly) well fitted the variables are to eachother. The "≠ causation" is sarcasm.

Thanks. I don't always detect sarcasm very well online. So basically there's a 66% correlation between social trust and demographic diversity right? What's the other 34%? This might sound silly, but since 1.00 is the maximum, then 0.00 is the minimum right?

That's not how the math works, read the Wiki link.

          1. It's not a percentage 2. You can think of "r as an index of quality of fit" going between 0 and 1 but it also indicates the direction of the relation so it also goes between 0 and -1 https://youtu.be/ugd4k3dC_8Y  Simple conceptual explanation in case the wiki article is unclear

          Replying to @eigenmacht @Cat9bx0219 and

Not a perfectly rigorous explanation but you should get the gist of it. The images in the wiki article should also give you a decent intuition.
