Quick guess- not living together before marriage is an indicator of people from more traditional, religious backgrounds, where divorce/ promiscuity etc are frowned upon, possibly more likely to also have lots of kids thereby increasing ties that limit inclination to divorce
So, we think self-selection is most of the difference. In general, that is a good prior. Hard to test though. I doubt one can find a twin study for this question, but maybe a sibling study.
