In the drug realm, the incentive is to be right, fast. So when you can't replicate an academic study, shut down the research and tell your boss it won't pan out, so quit wasting money. The industrial non-replication rate of academic studies in Pharma is well over half.

The incentive for fraud in academia is cultural and political power. But, for some reason, that's less obvious or frightening to people than monetary incentives.
