What about getting paid less and being expected to put out more work faster? Seems like that would interfere with long-term projects like getting employed to report from the inside of a corporation.

What about simpler explanation: info is now much easier to get, and other people have often done the dirty work of leaking, badgering, etc. for you. Allows less hounding in the news hound business. So they’re not so much nicer as they are further down the supply chain.
