I was considering adding some puns based on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanin_theory …

The hormone obviously does something, but that's mean trying to eat it and get an effect will work. Might not be uptaken properly, or body might just respond by reducing it's levels etc.

Personally I find it extremely effective, overly so. It always causes me to become intensely sleepy within about 20 minutes at doses of ~1mg, but I inevitably oversleep by a couple hours and am more tired the following morning.
-
At 0.5mg it is a bit less intensely soporific, though with less of an overshoot. Using an entire 3mg lozenge a few times a long time ago before doing more research generally caused severe oversleeping and tiredness much of the following day.
-
Then again, GABA supplements always work well as occasional anxiolytics for me as well, so perhaps BBB permeability is higher for me than average. Unclear. Entirely speculative.
-
I don't think it is a placebo. The effects are unmistakable in both cases and I have sometimes forgotten what I did to feel that way before later remembering again, which suggests that effects are apparent even without a recalled cause.
-
Also what on Earth does _eating_ melatonin prove about dosing safety? It's supposed to be used sublingually to improve bioavailability.
-
The stated elimination half-life is also consistent with the duration of the subjective effects-- if I use melatonin to fall asleep and then get distracted from sleeping for more than about an hour or two, soporific effects expire. I don't remember if I still oversleep, though.

I wanted to switch Zolpidem to Melatonin, but I will not even consider it
