There's several good free options for English speakers including verbal tests. I don't know of any free verbal tests for other languages. I should write a blogpost.

Is a measure of verbal IQ really the 'gold standard'? Shouldn't a good IQ test be multidimensional (though I get that all the components tend to correlate)?

Yes? So, when you don't include verbal, it will be worse.
