TIME trying to shame Denmark for some new anti-immigrant laws. Featuring this picture of 'far right' demonstration. Sign says "for freedom" and one can see a bunch of old people and women being guarded by police against terror organization ANTIFA. http://time.com/5329100/denmark-ghetto-policies-liberal-europe/ …pic.twitter.com/QFol8LAMSJ

Yeah yeah... Emil... but, setting aside the rhetoric. This is an illiberal idea of having special laws for certain groups of people. Every other Dane can opt out of daycare.

I'm not in favor of either ghetto law or Burka ban, but if we can't get any proper reform, then maybe we will have to make do with these minor annoyance laws...

What would proper reform look like?

Welcome, help and protect those who want to live in a free society and set clear signs of expectations. There's a reason people flee countries like Iran. We should not allow what they flee from to follow them here.

... so that means things like stop making citizens test depend on knowledge of old Danish film productions and start making it depend on engagement in civil society.

Knowledge of old Danish film is a decent proxy of interest in Danish culture, which is what we want -- along with actual ability to do so.

What we want to be knowledge of the values of liberal democracy - and a wish to live in such a society. I couldn't care less about whether they eat pork, celebrate chistimas, knows the actors in 40 year old danish movies or any other culture-thing.

Maybe you don't but most Danes do. You're a very odd person. It's not primarily about values, but ability. Ability selection is key to any successful immigration policy.

Did you just bait and switch from "culture" to "ability" ?

It's mostly about ability, and one can get that indirectly thru values/culture.

So... it is about values? Let me be clear. I would welcome any Ayaan Hirsi Ali or Maajid Nawaz, or Gary Kasparov.... But we should protect them against people like Anjem Choudary... That's significantly more important than whether they can spell "Oehlenschläger" or eat pork.

Your refusal to deal with practical reality is annoying. You can't get your dreamy ideas implemented. You can maybe get something like a Burka ban. Do you think mass Muslim immigration to Denmark is working out well? No, well, then find a way to reduce it -- in practice.

I'm not refusing to deal with practical reality just because I think many of the questions for Danish citizenship are stupid. ...get real. This "in practice" thing can't even be evaluated via Twitter. All I'm saying is that the "solutions" of DF are illiberal.

Liberal or illiberal, doesn't matter in itself. Thinking too much like a natural law libertarian. Net benefit matters. I'll take a Burka ban if we can avoid another 100k welfare immigrants. Burka ban, though silly, has essentially zero impact on my way of life.

We're back to ignoring reality and living in dreamy Peter-land where you can get random policies implemented and don't have to deal with realpolitik.
