Japan is a notable outlier, though. It was never colonized, and yet deliberately sought out and deployed European technologies and methods of organizing industry, which it then adapted in its own manner over time. Colonialism per se was not needed for tech diffusion.
It was invaded by Euros, but resisted big migration while learning from Euro tech/politics. Best combo for a non-Euro people, but not one all were able to do.

Literally some Euros traveling there and with threatening military action (actual invasion) forcing locals to be open to Euro stuff.
