Comparing the working paper versions with the published versions would be an interesting window into the biasing effects of review process. Which caveats gets added? Claims deleted?
Japan is a notable outlier, though. It was never colonized, and yet deliberately sought out and deployed European technologies and methods of organizing industry, which it then adapted in its own manner over time. Colonialism per se was not needed for tech diffusion.
It was invaded by Euros, but resisted big migration while learning from Euro tech/politics. Best combo for a non-Euro people, but not one all were able to do.

May require more extensive controls. That said, I'm not entirely surprised, given that European influences on e.g. legal systems and property rights could have encouraged later inflows of additional European investment capital.
