Maybe @akarlin88 knows where to find more of these kinds of stats. This website has a lot of numbers, but sources are unclear. It's quite obvious that German military was extremely good, especially compared to Slavs. https://ww2-weapons.com/military-performance/ …https://ww2-weapons.com/fighting-power-of-the-wehrmacht/ …

I have heard a similar thing about Napoleon's troops.
-
Yep. From same book. One could probably make a general index this way of all major generals in history. Rommel was considered very good by the allies, so he will probably get a good score.pic.twitter.com/VJS7vTqS7c

Great find! He used a very similar method to what I would have done, except I didn't know about the WAR stuff because I daf about sportsball.
-
Problem with this approach vs. the one discussed by Turchin is that this one is biased by overall progress of the war (it uses outcomes instead of relative losses) and there's probably issues with the highly nonnormal distribution of number of battles.

In 1943/44 German troops would have been fighting defensively to protect their homeland. Allied troops, knew they were winning & wanted to finish the war alive. German troops weren’t better, they were more desperate. There’s a huge difference.
-
Doesn't work because the Germans were very effective early in the war as well.
-
Not to mention that they have been fighting extremely well in 1871 and in the first world war as well.
-
Please don't forget that fighting in 43/ early 44 was nowhere near "core" Germany. France isn't Germany. Belgium isn't Germany. Byelorussia isn't Germany. Ukraine isn't Germany. Poland also isn't Germany.
-
I haven’t forgotten that. I just think most Germans would have realized they where losing & if they didn’t stop the allies they would soon be fighting in Germany. Where as the allies would know they were going to win. A performance over the entire war would be good.

Good point

War math is simultaneously fascinating and terrifying.

Somewhere in Thomas Sowell's "Cultures" series, he discusses the impressive number of different countries that have benefited from Germans running their military affairs like https://books.google.com/books?id=cgSqA0vGpcoC&lpg=PA180&pg=PA180#v=onepage&q&f=false …pic.twitter.com/fcuIfMqFcj

Wasn't it that the British or USA soldiers were more careful in battle preparation and always aimed to have the 30-50% extra troops on their side? Which would skew the numbers and impression. Do we know any 1:1 battles results?
