I don't think so, however Ellis Island collected information such as residence and occupation from new arrivals, so it could be possible. The source I last recall on more northern European migration said those who returned home were disproportionately rural family farmer types.
Evidence from other angles too strong for me to believe that there is not something wrong with the usual presentation of this situation.
