      1) Our new genome-wide association study for IQ (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-018-04362-x …) included the peripheral result that some genes linked to higher IQ are also linked to higher likelihood of poor eyesight. Here's how the media bollocksed up the coverage of it in almost every way:

      2) The Telegraph turned a genetic correlation of .29 into "those who were more intelligent were nearly 30 per cent more likely to have genes indicating they require reading glasses" (!?!?):https://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2018/05/29/glasses-wearers-really-intelligent-genes/ …

      3) The Telegraph also described a sample size (44,480) that's nowhere near the actual sample size of the study (300,486). None of us have any idea where this number came from. It was repeated in several other stories. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      4) The lead author of the study is Gail Davies. This article (http://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/wear-glasses-you-really-are-smarter-according-to-science/ …) says "Gail Davis". This article (https://theweeklyobserver.com/people-wear-glasses-genetic-predisposition-smarter/34660/ …) says "Gaye Davis". Because, well, fuck it.

      5) The Guardian thought that it would be a good idea to include a finger-wagging virtue-signal about how "linking intelligence to DNA can quickly lead to bogus "race science". Thanks guys.https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/may/30/glasses-smarter-study-intelligence-bad-eyesight-link-health-benefits …

Race differences in myopia are well known, something you surely know.

Myopia is extremely common in East Asians, rate are low in blacks, very low in Australian aborigines.

I thought myopia was thought to be mostly associated with lack of sunlight. So less race differences than societal ones.

Probably not - if so, I would have had to be brought up in a cave. Genetics matters, environment too I think.

It’s possible for a trait to be influenced by an environmental factor while showing a genetically determined degree of response to that factor.

Yes I know. Environmental differences seem to have the greater influence on myopia, going by recent research.

And it’s also possible for a trait to be “racial” while being more strongly influenced by environment than by genetics (as long as it has a genetic component).
