I don't know if they wanted to 'indirectly ban them'. Usually businesses couldn't care less about sexual orientation of employees... That writeup makes it sound much more like they were desperate to save the image of female sports from driving away straight women/general public.

That's what I mean. If you let in tons of people the spectators either don't find attractive or can identify with, it will hurt sales. Their reasoning.

Could be either taste-based discrimination or statistical discrimination. Very different things. Taste-based, they are bigots who hate lesbians even if the lesbians are totally undetectable. Statistical, it's in everyone's interest to hide it *esp* players (no ban wanted/needed).
