Trump on Monday will request $740.5 billion for defense (same as the FY21 cap) but likely well below the $634.5 billion non-defense cap. "Senior aides have also begun discussing ways to lower the deficit—which is projected to reach $1 trillion in 2020..."

“Despite terminating RKV, MDA is proceeding with plans to expand the GBI fleet in Alaska by 20 interceptors -- from 40 to 60. A follow-on interceptor that takes nearly a decade to develop could mean these new silos sit empty.”

What a familiar, predictable mess. $1.3 billion down the drain. By the way, $12 billion ain’t gonna cover a new, exquisite interceptor [and a possible RKV gap-filler]. And it ain’t gonna be ready by 2030.

He has to know a CR through the election, if not longer, is highly likely, a likelihood made even more likely by the coming pilfer of previously appropriated FY 2020 DoD funds for the wall.

Also, it's long past time to stop saying nukes are cheap, they're "only" 6-7% of DoD budget, etc. The opportunity costs are real and only going to get worse. We're cutting a Virginia class SSN for a one year NNSA increase. The biggest Columbia and GBSD bills haven't hit yet!

If is looking for savings to reinvest in other priorities, how about ending the unnecessary mission at the SW border for active duty units and refuse to spend $13.3 Billion in MILCON & counter-drug funds for a border fence?

The 2018 NDS purports to reorient DoD toward great power competition, w/China billed as the top priority. So whats more relevant? A Virginia class SSN? Or billions more for an already excessive and overburdened NNSA nuke modernization effort that the agency wont be able to spend?

"the new budget proposal, which came as [Sen Inhofe] spearheaded a successful effort to boost funding for the [NNSA] by about $2.5 billion to nearly $20 billion. To meet that goal, the Pentagon shifted about $1.6 billion of the proposed funds away from the submarine program."

Holy cow!! Part of the offset for the late addition in FY 2021 of ~$2.5 billion for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is...wait for it...a Virginia class submarine! Wow!!

.: But then I’m told that, about a week later in a meeting..., he brought up this chart again, basically saying, “How come I can’t have as many nuclear weapons as some previous presidents have had?” He brought it up again one or two other times.
