This mortar system, is it a veteran system, an equipment, something you find in the world?
Yes it is, the infantry unit is free to drop it and also operate a MG system or a cannon system. These can sometimes be found around the map or built at base. It's big for stylistic reasons and to give some protection to the crew as they are likely to come under fire from mechs.
