WEALTH INEQUALITY: The richest 1% controls more wealth now than at any time in more than 50 years. But what does wealth inequality really look like?
@TonyDokoupil turned America’s economic pie into a real one and asked people a simple question: Who gets what?pic.twitter.com/scGPKcHbie

Wealth is not finite, but access to it relative to a specific point in time is. With no capital or assets, and no person or business willing to employ the person, wealth accumulation is effectively impossible for many. Starvation doesn't always wait for wealth to trickle down.
-
The issue is not so much that someone else has more, it’s that far too many don’t have *enough* to live on, while the top 10% are using their wealth and power to keep if not enhance the inequality. If everyone has some pie, it matter far less who has the bigger piece.

That question is unnecessarily hypothetical. The evidence at hand is that wealth *has* grown unequally. The correct question is therefore not ”What’s to stop people from getting rich themselves?”, but ”What has stopped them?”

Because we use a competitive system to determine price, massive wealth disparity does harm many.

There are at any moment, limits to available resources and means of productivity. There are limits to factory production and limits to the number of people available to work there. There are limits to the amounts of raw materials that can be used to produce goods.

it essentially is. poverty is a requirement of capitalism as we know it, not some sad unintended consequence.

money is not limited, money is not wealth, wealth is not unlimited.

True that it's not finite--the rich people's slices of pie will continue getting larger, faster over time, while the rest of our crumbs shrink. Meanwhile much of that "growth" comes from the natural resource extraction that is causing climate change and killing our planet

I keep seeing this assertion and no one ever brings up inflation.

-
The rich hate inflation, because it provokes workers into demanding pay raises and decreases the value of their assets - cash, and your debts - while your pay increases. Hence the economy is run with low inflation as it's primary benchmark
