But what if GSK finds a disease I should know about?!

They'll surely contact you to market their drug for it.
-
And possibly let your insurance company know in the process that you have a condition that could affect your coverage

if 23&me was ever compromised, an attacker would gain the following information: DNA, physical address, mailing address, birth date, family history, email address, portal creds, IP address, name, DNA reports - combine that with Marriott and OPMpic.twitter.com/veToWh6vbR

You're assuming they haven't already been compromised. How long did it take for the OPM hack to go public?

I was trying to be kind

You have been enrolled in one year of premium DNA anti-cloning protection.... But seriously, what's worse for a spy than their DNA? What's best for a spy... knowing someone has (or will have) specific medical ailments or be predisposed to a given pressure...

OPM data can be easily weaponized, but DNA not diamonds, are forever ;)

I was told at a technology conference by an IT executive at Blue Cross that 23 and me outsources the DNA sequencing to China because they can do it cheaper, and that the Chinese are storing our DNA for medical research, so actually GSK might be late here to this game.

What Facebook is doing to your data, 23andMe is doing to your genetic code.

Its a great business model. Get people to submit a DNS sample, and *pay you for it*, to know some nebulous information about ancestry. "40% Eastern European, 10% Northern Europe"; then sell the data to all comers. Big Pharm, Insurance Cos, police. Great.

These DNA testing companies not only have your own DNA but also a proportion of your siblings and children. This can be used against them in the future.

Yep. Just a few months ago I recall several researchers in various fields insisting that this exact outcome wouldn’t happen and that obviously abuses wouldn’t occur because labs never disregard protocols for profits.

I'm building an insurance website for a guy who's in the fed right now for insurance fraud. The whole business approach to this website is all telemarketing to anyone who has a non US residence. I have everything ready for all that data, like encryption...

but it's on the host side and this is why this interest me is all.

The apathy in those comments sadly seems the majority. If the market demand it the maker will allow it..
