where do i begin in responding? it is always a similar story, similarly vague. there's a deep need that a lot of folks have to be an Indian.
-
i see a pervasive fetishization of ancestry alone, and very little notion that a tribal or indigenous community actually matters.

It all seems very odd to me. Most Cherokee only need to go back 2-4 generations to find a direct ancestor on either the Dawes or Baker rolls. DNA tests can't prove tribal ancestry and even if they could, wouldn't mean you had any real connection to it.
-
As a "mission indian" in san diego, Most mexicans will have some indigenous ancestry, but there is a clear difference between the indigenous natives in Baja and Mexicans who have no connection to any tribes. It's sort of frustrating when even their DNA is + "native american."

My grandmother told me she was part NA. Had black hair down to ankles at 72. Was 5' tall w round flat face and a hooked nose. She believed she was NA. 23&me showed I was 100% NEuro. Brothers had teased her!

Your DNA has little to nothing to do with your grandmother's. Due to the millions of possible DNA combinations parents can pass to children, you may have only received "European" DNA from her, while she did possibly have Native ancestry. Full siblings can get different results.

All I know is that my dna from 2 sources showed I have a little bit of everything so I check other on forms. I guess I am just a mutt. By the way White nor black is a race. That is just color coding.personally, I am just a shade of brown like everyone else.

My mothers side if the family always said that my great, great, great, grandmother was Native American. My great uncle said he remembered her (his great grandma). I treasure this story of my ancestry, because I love my family, this story was part of them.
