'Amritsar 1919' is out in paperback and in hindsight I realize it was a bit silly to spend so much time agonizing about choosing the right cover...

The Muslim Moros of the southern Philippines are the very people that Trump referred to as 'terrorists' when he described how General Pershing dipped bullets in pig's blood to stop them from running amok. And that is why my next book is both about the past and the present.

Here is one of the American officers justifying Bud Dajo shortly afterwards: 'The slaughter of so many may appear to those at home to be terrible, but these people want to die when they have made up their minds to it and nothing but death will satisfy them.' 1/

At Bud Dajo, it is estimated that some 800-1000 Moros - men, women and children - were killed. The US troops suffered 21 dead. This is a photograph taken in the immediate aftermath of the fight described in the letter (WARNING GRAPHIC):

The letter ends with these words: 'It does seem a shame for such land to be occupied by a people so worthless as the Moros. I would like to get another whack at them, but hardly expect the opportunity, as I think we have learned them a lesson they won't forget soon.' 5/

'The intense heat, with the sight and scent of so much blood, crazed me and I lost all respect for human life and fought lie a demon everything in reach of me, regardless of age or sex, and thought nothing of it at the time, but it shocks me to think of it now.' 3/

'Our hardest fight was after we got over the walls. 1,200 to 1,500 were killed, and over 300 of that number were women and children. It was a terrible slaughter, but could not be averted.' 2/

Here is an American soldier describing the Bud Dajo Massacre of 1906 in a letter to his mom: 'Just as we were crossing over their wall one hundred Moros came rushing down upon us. We had to fight them hand to hand. They were killed out in 20 minutes.' 1/

How differently we as historians treat perpetrators in colonial campaigns compared to those of 20th century genocides - not least because the latter are criminalized while the former were awarded medals and get to write their own history.

‘In an increasingly acrimonious dispute, backers of the campaign to repatriate regalia belonging to Crowfoot of the Blackfoot Nation were told by the Museum that “no one wants to get their hands dirty” when it came repatriating looted artefacts held in UK’

See - a white man acknowledged the existence of systemic racism, and the uneven distribution of privilege and opportunity, and it did not kill him. It did not rend him limb from limb. , take note. You might learn something.
