And FGM is extremely rare to happen in Canada. It happens outside of Canada... medical tourism. And it's not solely the Islamic community. Many African christians preform FGM as well.

The important thing to realize about FGM is it comes in all kinds of different forms: http://www.who.int/reproductivehealth/topics/fgm/overview/en/ … I'd never try to say a male circumcision compares to Type III (infibulation). But Type Ia is analogous, and Type IV (pricking, piercing) is generally less invasive.

Stop calling it FGM. Call it female circumcision. 1) That's what circumcised women call it. 2) "FGM" indicates it's different from male circumcision when in fact it isn't.

Female genital mutilation is barbaric, and anyone who practices it or condones it has no place in Canada.

I agree, forcing unconsented unnecessary irreversible amputation on a child is absolutely unconscionable. http://journalofethics.ama-assn.org/2017/08/msoc2-1708.html … The physical damage varies from cut to cut, and the anatomy varies between sexes, but the basic ethical principle is the same: Bodily autonomy.

I agree. I also don't think it is unreasonable to recognize that the consequences of female genital MUTILATION are far more severe than the consequences of MGM.

I would definitely agree they SOMETIMES are. But to make a general statement like "FGM is worse than MGM"? When FGM includes things like a pinprick or a piercing? And MGM includes things like subincision? When some males DIE on the table? They can't be compared so simply

The existence of milder forms of FGM do not negate the evils of FGM done "properly". Especially when those milder forms are exceedingly rare compared to the "full" mutilation.

There's no evidence of that though. If you have credible numbers on how prevalent the different types of FGM are, beyond "Type III is about 10%", please share them because I've been able to find no such data...

The credible numbers are that reported instances of FGM in Canada went from 0 to hundreds per year in 2016. In the UK, they went from 0 per day to a dozen or so per day from 2015-2016. People are not reporting "pinpricks and piercings."

Again, I want a citation on the last bit. My understanding is the big FGM case in America that made the news was a case of "nicking or scraping", not clitoridectomy. I've heard they find many FGM cases hard to prosecute because they were less severe than male circumcision. :/

I'm afraid one of the many negative side effects of today's politically correct environment is that we'll probably never get accurate reporting on these issues. It's considered racist to even collect stats.

Hey, that's something we can agree on. Sensitivity to religion obstructing important science is one of my grudges too: http://www.drmomma.org/2009/10/mri-studies-brain-permanently-altered.html?m=1 … "had to destroy all of our results. If we refused to comply, we were all threatened with immediate dismissal and legal action."

I bet you we agree on most things. The divide between presumed left and the literal Trump-supporting alt-right (me) is nowhere near as big as the fake news wants us to believe.
