    Tech often espouses the idea of leaving code better than you found it. Unions are the same idea applied to the workplace itself. We love things that are meta. We should love unions!

    At its core, unions are about helping to level the power imbalance between you & your employer. Whether you end up fighting for higher salaries, or an ice cream fountain, why wouldn't you want that? Why would you want to have no power at all at your job?

    This article is extremely compelling. Not only does it show why Income Share Agreements that are financed completely wreck incentives, but even unfinanced ISAs are problematic.

    . analysis of ISAs is really interesting. I highly recommend reading this blog and giving Christof a follow to learn more about why ISAs are very problematic.

    People enter tech for financial reasons. Most tech workers don't have access to old money. In some cases, their current financial security or worth is their family's only retirement plan.

    This. Another nuance people miss is that SV has to import workers internationally in order to survive. Work visas don't sponsor spouses. Many households of 3 or 4 only have one person working.

    The people in tech I know are balancing high rents, student loans, healthcare bills, and being their parents' retirement plan, just like everyone else. *she types as she sits in her mom's home that she helps pay rent for with $15 in her checking account*

    You're serious? Let me be clear... if you are a minority in tech, you are last hired and first let go. Minorities work disproportionately in certain G&A functions... marketing, sales, legal, and other "overhead." Also, contractors do a LOT of tech work with no protections, so...

    This morning, after six years of pouring my life into the mission, the staff, and the creators of , I was fired for organizing a union. They offered me no real reasons, but one month's severance for signing an NDA. I will not be signing it.

    As kickstarter employees come forward with stories of management's unfair labor practices, I (who have organized a union) remind you to wait for workers' specific call to action & not mistakenly undermine their strategic efforts via your own tactics such as boycott. (thread)

    I’ve organized a union & been union-busted by my employer. As you react to the news that kickstarter isn’t voluntarily recognizing unionizing efforts, don’t jump to boycott, which may help or harm employees as strategy depending on specifics. Wait for the union’s call to action.

    My last job gave me 6 weeks pay when I got laid off. And they tried to get me to work through those 6 weeks. I said no. (Oh and my last paycheck was a couple hundred short, and they didn't pay out my vacation days.) I was out of a job and completely at their mercy.
