Priyanka "Girl, Don't Yell" Chopra is an investor in Holberton School, a tech bootcamp that promises grads a career with a 6 figure salary. On the surface, it seems like a great program. However... If Lambda School is trash, then Holberton School is a dumpster fire. Thread.

NFL has a players union. MLB has a players union. But thinks it's unreasonable that people earning 2 or 3% as much should unionize?

Ectopic pregnancies can literally kill the women who experience them, and often the only treatment is abortion. Abortion opponents are now calling for "watchful waiting," instead of treatment, which doctors are calling "malpractice."

The vast majority of Americans aren't. And yet people flex what little they have, and look down on those who make less than them. As if most folks aren't 1 missed paycheck or health crisis away from being homeless.

Black cis women were once told (by white people) they weren’t real women and the remembering of that can either be a teacher on why transphobia is violent, dumb as shit, and born from white supremacist ideas of gender,

That you pay someone this little at Stack Overflow to live in a major metro and don’t understand why tech workers would unionize is seriously embarrassing.

    I love this exchange

A subthread, in which psu_chris writes "unions don't guarantee anything. they 'try' but will gladly take your money"

The reply from paycircuit reads "have a great WEEKEND"

Tech often espouses the idea of leaving code better than you found it. Unions are the same idea applied to the workplace itself. We love things that are meta. We should love unions!

This article is extremely compelling. Not only does it show why Income Share Agreements that are financed completely wreck incentives, but even unfinanced ISAs are problematic.

People enter tech for financial reasons. Most tech workers don't have access to old money. In some cases, their current financial security or worth is their family's only retirement plan.

This. Another nuance people miss is that SV has to import workers internationally in order to survive. Work visas don't sponsor spouses. Many households of 3 or 4 only have one person working.

You're serious? Let me be clear... if you are a minority in tech, you are last hired and first let go. Minorities work disproportionately in certain G&A functions... marketing, sales, legal, and other "overhead." Also, contractors do a LOT of tech work with no protections, so...

Somebody gotta say it: The overwhelming support for Joe Biden is based purely off fear that white folks won’t vote for anyone else on that stage. Because there is no way you see him in these moments and think he’s actually the best candidate.

"Ya'll hoes broke I make x amount of money, ya'll don't cuz yall lazy" Great to hear in a rap song when you're at a club, doesn't actually apply to everyone in real life

As kickstarter employees come forward with stories of management's unfair labor practices, I (who have organized a union) remind you to wait for workers' specific call to action & not mistakenly undermine their strategic efforts via your own tactics such as boycott. (thread)

Just because *some* of us in tech make a higher salary than most Americans, doesn't mean we're not workers. Doesn't mean we shouldn't fight for our rights. Doesn't mean we don't need a union.

My last job gave me 6 weeks pay when I got laid off. And they tried to get me to work through those 6 weeks. I said no. (Oh and my last paycheck was a couple hundred short, and they didn't pay out my vacation days.) I was out of a job and completely at their mercy.
