This is absolutely incredible! There was a 2015 paper that showed that a circulating strain of bat coronavirus could, under the right constellation of events, acquire a missing piece that would enable it to infect and replicate in humans. Exactly what happened with 2019-nCoV.

He claims to be a Harvard epidemiologist, and on paper that's true. He's a visiting scientist, not a regular Harvard faculty member. He's a nutritionist, not an infectious disease epidemiologist. He's fanned the flames of numerous conspiracies.

I was really excited when I saw some positive events in my dot plot. So I gated them and displayed a new dot plot next to the original one to look into this further, but the events disappeared! I was gating the laptop screen dirt.

Outbreaks (like this, Zika, ...) seem to rile virologists up, understandably so. It can bring out defensiveness of the "less hot" viruses. But can we acknowledge that virology isn't a competition between viruses? An outbreak doesn't diminish the importance of your work.

A piRNA cluster analogous to flamenco (somatic piRNA cluster in Drosophila) is a major source of EVE-derived, antisense piRNAs in Aedes aegypti.🦟 What selective pressures, if any, drove fixation of somatic piRNA-generating EVEs in the Aedes genome?🧐
