Last night I tried to describe the rationalist community to a friend who had never heard of it. I struggled, but finally settled on describing it as "A school of philosophy that arose on the internet rather than in the academy."

Up until this moment, I had never heard about a rationalist community. What are you rationalist with respect to? Is it survival? Socio-economic success? Morality?

The ideas of rationality are often independent of the goals. Nonetheless, if I had to pick a goal to describe the community, I would say the goal is to form accurate beliefs about the world.
