Last night I tried to describe the rationalist community to a friend who had never heard of it. I struggled, but finally settled on describing it as "A school of philosophy that arose on the internet rather than in the academy."
I'm probably doing a bad job here of articulating the itch that I'm trying to scratch... :)

I'd disagree only about crypto - there is economic + cryptographic theorizing and research being done in crypto that I'm honestly surprised academia isn't mirroring.

Good point. I’m sure crypto research is being done in academia, but it’s being vastly outpaced by the amateur and private sector work.

I wonder if there's something in zone you want around studying networks and complexity. Was really hard to do before internet (due to sensitivity of results to any missing part of network)
