I started by reading The Processes of Life - Lawrence E. Hunter. Now, one year later I'm re-reading it and I find myself understanding everything much better.

This is a standard textbook. When I was PM at molecular diagnostic firm, I found it rather straight forward to review a chapter/section to learn some concept, (eg PCR).
