What’s a good movie / tv show that escapes the narrative fallacy? I’d like to watch something showing men evolving inside complex, emergent systems, instead of the usual emphasis on the impact and linear story of a lone hero

oh man, this expresses almost exactly what I want most from my own TV and movie experiences. I’ll share some of my recommendations if you’ll share yours :).

      1. The Wire (obviously?) 2. Deadwood. Even better than the Wire on this dimension, IMO. 3. Boyhood. Probably my favorite movie of all time. 4. The Florida Project. Kinda smaller in scope than the others, but it very much escapes the narrative fallacy.

These fall into three of my favorite made up genres - structuralism - structuralism - slice of life - cobstraint

Oh yeah, good to differentiate structuralism from slice of life. They both do something similar for me but I could imagine someone liking one but not the other. What is constraint? (Or did you mean cobstraint? 😆)

I understand the distinction intuitively, but wonder on what dimension it happens, and what lies further in either direction of that spectrum

A stab: structuralism shows bigger systemic patterns emerging, whereas slice-of-life just gives you a glimpse into one little (very realistic) corner of something. The Wire is probably the best piece of structuralist fiction. What are some great slice-of-life movies/TV shows?

Slice of life show: High Maintenance. Show about the many different ways of living in the same city masquerading as a show about weed.
