Self-acceptance. Our motivés hide because we disapprove of them. But seeing isn't already understanding so we also need curiosity, we have to see ourselves as fascinating strangers.
-
If you want to change your motives? Accept your disapproval and get curious where it comes from.

Haven't read it yet (on my to-do list), but I've begun to think about this problem as "Christianity without Easter". If Jesus died on the cross and that was the end of the story, you'd have a cynical conclusion: everyone would selfishly betray you in the end.
-
This is the alt-right/Trumpian worldview: everyone is selfish, we should be honest about that, declare Me/Us/America First!, and move on. But Christianity With Easter offers a path to transcending that terrible conclusion.

Although if evolution determined that strategic ignorance is useful, than maybe knowledge is not power. Maybe knowledge is an active hindrance. Both because "self-consciousness" can be debilitating, and for a similar reason econs cooperate less in prisoner's dilemmas.

I'll wait until I've read the book to give detailed feedback, but I will say one thing. Meditation (especially after significant practice) is the best tool I've found to catch my brain while making decisions for usually hidden, often bad reasons.

Surround myself with incentives for accuracy and intellectual honesty where feasible, both 'objective' incentives (e.g. writing down checkable predictions) and social incentives.
