It seems more like he's prostrating himself before the masses. Reminds me of the Great Awakening. People would individually confess their sins before a public audience. I think the exact call was, "Stand up and admit you're a sinner."

Interesting. I agree it matches that antipattern, if viewed from a certain angle. But absent a lot more context and info, I think it’s better to take at face value, assuming good faith all around.
